100 mile time trials are painful. No shit Sherlock. Last year I did a 5:47 in extreme cold, wind and driving wind. This year the weather was at the opposite end of the scale. 25degrees, hot, dry and with only a little breeze.
Perfect you might think. Not so when you take in my natural ability to self destruct. I didn't think it through and thought three drinks bottles would be enough. For 5 and a half hours in the saddle. Muppet.
I started off well and by the half way point was averaging 18.7mph, with the feeling I had more in the tank if needed. I was only sipping though with a raging thirst. Liquid conservation is not a sensible tactic in a long TT.
At 50mile my right leg cramped. Inside of the thigh. From this point on I had to stand ever two or three mile to stretch out. This worked until 77 miles. Then the right leg locked completely and I had to unclip. I stopped at 80 mile to stretch and this was where the fun began. After a couple of minutes I got back on and made it another mile down the road before the letter leg locked with cramp. It was all I could do to get off the bike. Three or four minutes later I managed to get back on at the third attempt. The last 18miles or so were hell. I spent a lot of time standing and a lot of time stretching. Looking at my splits I lost at least 11 minutes in the last 20 miles.
I finished with a 5hr 35 time. Disappointed with my own stupidity as stamina wise and speed wise I was going well today. First time I have ever suffered cramp on a bike. Hopefully the last.
